What is Massage Therapy?

Massage Therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints. Massage therapy helps alleviate the soft tissue discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular over-use and many chronic pain conditions. If clients have accidents, involving trauma and injury, massage therapy can greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterning.

What should I do during my massage to make the best of it?

Always give feedback to your therapist. Let him/her know if the pressure is too little or too much. Are you too cold or hot?  Or comfortable.

Be sure to let the therapist know if something makes you uncomfortable, or if something he/she is doing is working well for you.

Breathe deep & regular - do not hold your breath.

Consciously go through every body part from head to toe and relax it. Sink all your weight into the table. Your body should be limp with the therapist left to lift the weight. Do not assist.

Allow yourself to release emotions. Often during massage emotions can be triggered. Do not feel embarrassed, if you wish to cry, do so. If you want to laugh, feel free. Our therapists are trained to work through these emotional releases. If you wish to talk about it, rest assured the conversation will remain completely confidential. Please understand however, our therapists are not trained in psychology.   They are simply prepared to listen.

What do I wear during my massage?

Massage is traditionally done in the nude with towels and sheets covering all "private areas".  However, our therapists are trained in draping techniques to leave all necessary body parts covered. If you are more comfortable with more clothing, feel free to wear what you like. Your therapist will work within your comfort level.

How fast will I start to feel better & is the relief permanent?

Stress / Pain / Tension in the body develop over a period of time. In most cases you will feel relief temporarily. This could mean a few hours to a few days. You will need to discuss with your therapist what type of treatment plan will best work for you, so that you can maintain healthier muscle tissue.

What are knots?

Knots / Adhesions are muscle fibers or tissues that are no longer receiving oxygen and are not functioning well, if at all. They usually form around an old inflamed injury or overused muscle. They limit flexibility and range of motion. Your therapist will use cross-fiber techniques  and apply pressure to help break the "knot" down and bring oxygen & nutrients to the area in efforts to revive these fibers.

What qualifies a Massage Therapist to practice?

There are rules & regulations to become a Licensed Massage Therapist. You must complete training with a credited college and pass a board exam. Education includes physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, nutrition and ethics courses. However, requirements change city to city. All therapists are licensed in their area.

Does massage hurt?

A massage treatment should never hurt. Some tolerable discomfort may occur depending on the type of therapy you and your therapist have arranged. Always communicate with your therapist if he/she has passed your threshold for pain. Pain will cause you to tighten up and resist the pressure the therapist is applying. This will not lead to the results you are looking for.  Over time you will develop a relationship with your therapist and a higher threshold to pressure, leading to the long-term results that you are seeking. Just be sure you know the difference between discomfort and pain.
